General Nursing and Midwifery

General Nursing and Midwifery is a course studied under the certified diploma degree. This course is taught for three years with an additional six months of internship. This program offers foundation education and nursing practice for all the students. After the course completion, the nurses can be able to work in different health care firms where their qualification is accepted. As the General Nursing and Midwifery graduates complete the course, they are placed as in charge of taking care of women during their pregnancy and the post pregnancy period. It is one of the specialized areas of nursing education.

This course is taken up so that the students may develop their knowledge of general health and move to the specific area of their choice like pharmacology, child care, pediatrics, orthopedics, nutrition and emergency nursing. Some students may also join the Post Graduate B.Sc. Nursing course to further get enrolled in Masters Degree. The aim of this course is to render nurses who are highly skilled and qualified and who can contribute to the healthcare system as a crucial member. Midwifery is a field that is related to female health issues, during pregnancy, childbirth and after childbirth period.

Here the midwife goes through various information and training. The main aim of this course is to make the midwife to be familiar with the diverse process of normal progress of labor and have the knowledge to distinguish between different processes of labor. They are trained in a way that they can make a clear and quick decision in a critical situation such as a baby in posterior position, breech births, and twin births. The course of midwife is demanding worldwide. There are huge investments done for the training purpose of midwives in many countries of the globe.

Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery is known to be the first nursing and midwifery school which is now at King’s College of London. This school falls in the 6th position in the world for nursing education and number one in London and in the United Kingdom. The oldest nursing school in the world was established on 9 July 1860 by Florence Nightingale. Later the school made collaboration with Olive Haydon School of Midwifery and the Thomas Guy & Lewisham School of Nursing forming Nightingale and Guy’s College of Nursing & Midwifery. This institution after a certain period in 1993 was merged with King’s College London and named Nightingale Institute. Again in 1996 the Nightingale Institute and King’s College London got fully united and the institute was combined with Department of Nursing Studies and later formed Florence Nightingale Division of Nursing & Midwifery. This division again after three years was renamed to Florence Nightingale School of Nursing and Midwifery. Then lately in September 2014, King’s College London changed the department name into the ‘Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery’.

Eligibility Criteria

There are certain conditions given to the students if they are willing to study the General Nursing and Midwifery course. Some of the eligibility criteria to know before getting enrolled in this course are:

  • Age limit is 17-35 years
  • Candidates must be mentally fit
  • Should have good fluency and understanding of English language
Education Qualifications

Like the eligibility criteria, the nursing school also sees the education qualification for General Nursing and Midwifery course. Mainly candidates from science educational background are accepted in many of the colleges but if students from the different course are interested they are also given chance. Some of the educational qualifications to have before studying the General Nursing and Midwifery course are:

  • Completed 10+2 or equivalent examination with PCBE subjects
  • Aggregate marks in PUC examination in science or any stream
  • Pass marks in Pre-University Examination
