Overview
Varalakshmi College of Nursing was established in the year 2003, in accordance with Vralakshmi Trust founded by Mr.Vijay Kumar T with the sole aim of offering qualitative nursing education to prepare confidence and competition among the nurses in the society. This college stands still in Dasarahalli, Bangalore with decent inmfrastructures necessarily required for nursing education. VaralakshmI College of Nursing is affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Science, Bangalore and is recognized by the Government of Karnataka and Indian Nursing Council, New Delhi. In the year 2003 only the Diploma program was started but the Under Graduate Nursing program was then started just one year later in 2004, with an aim to provide primitive, curative and rehabilitative services in the society. In the year 2009, The Government of Karnataka and the Indian Nursing Council recognized the Institution for the Post Graduate program with 5 other specialties beside Post Basic Nursing program under the premise of Varalakshmi College of Nursing.
This college runs upon the slogan “The great aim of education is not knowledge but action”. The leadership of Prof. Walter Jaisingh P whose devotion in the guidance for the policies and standards of the college has today made the college known among the top institutions for proving the best quality education to the students. Prof. Walter aims to assure the students comfort and opportunities given to them to learn and develop the skills that are required for a strong basement to be a successful professional. The current trend in the health care industry demands the nurses to be well-versed with knowledge and practice which has been made effective through this college since 2003. The specialization is done by the nurses who work in patient care units, ambulatory care units, surgical centres, emergency care units etc. The nurses of this specialization deal with the health of adult patients. The nurses of this field are to study about medicines as well, as they are to look after the medication of the patients.
This area of nursing deals with women in their age from puberty till menopause. The nurses of this field give care to women who have health issues regarding their reproductive system like during pregnancy, child labour, birth etc.
The nurses of this area work in maternity wards.
The nurses are to pursue a diploma or a degree related to women’s health and obstetrics to become OB/GYN nurses. Minimum of 2 years of experiences is needed to sit for NCC Inpatient Obstetric Nursing certification Examination and become a certified OB/GYN nurse.
The nurses trained in this area are involved in healthcare of the community. They work in rural and urban community healthcare centres. The community health nurses are responsible for the health of an entire community. To become a community health nurse, one needs to be a registered nurse by getting a degree and by sitting for the exam of National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses. The nurses also need to have work experience for several years.
This area specializes in giving health care to infants and children. The nurses are given training in giving care to children or infants with health issues. To practice nursing of this area, the nurses needs to be a registered nurse with a bachelor’s degree.
Also known as mental health nursing is a course where the nurses specialize in mental health and care for people who are suffering from mental illness. Nurses of this area get training in psychological therapies. A psychiatric nurse is required to be a registered nurse and specialize in mental health.
